“Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.”

shopping bags

Through our campaign, the biggest long term impact will be achieved through educating users with correct information, enabling them to make better decisions, and advocates for change. In turn, they will refuse single-use plastics in general, beyond plastic bags, and instead choose reusable options.

Plastic Shopping Bags

There are few plastic recycling facilities in the country and region. Most plastic bags end up in landfills which are not well managed, leaving microplastics to end up in the environment; and those incinerated end up in the air. A lot of plastics are not disposed of properly at a consumer level, and littering is a common problem,  leading to the plastic ending up in the environment and waterways, which is hazardous for livestock, wildlife and marine life.

Reusable Shopping Bags

The “Change At The Till” campaign is already live! We use a mix of Digital Media (WhatsApp, Facebook & Instagram) and Non-Digital (Pop-up stands located in shopping malls) to educate and engage women shoppers who currently use plastic bags when shopping to be able to say “Plastiki? Ke a chencha!” (refusing single-use plastics), and instead to Pack your Shopping Bag (consciously choose to carry and use reusable shopping bags); so that the local consumer culture is changed to reusable shopping bags becoming the norm, and plastic bag usage becoming taboo.

Get Your Change

The use of plastics is culturally accepted and normal. Consumer know it is cheaper to make the switch to reusable shopping bags, but due to habit, don’t Make The Change. If they knew that not only is it cheaper, but continued usage affects them and the environment, then they would think about Making Change, not only for their pockets, but for the environment as well.

Wildlife is key to our economy, which contributed 13.1% to Botswana’s GDP through travel and tourism before the pandemic. We also rely on agriculture, as we are a nation with a relatively high number of subsistence farmers, we need to protect our environment.
